The day started sunny and breezy but instantly became a firestorm when the women took the courts today. And in a rare change in format due to us having 14 teams, the opening round had each team play 7 round robin games, each team getting a bye, to determine which top 2 teams from each bracket would move on to the Champions bracket and the 3rd and 4th place teams going on to play in the Consolation bracket, each for 3 more round robin games. Those top 8 teams went through a meat grinder but still came out smelling like roses in the end!
In the Blue bracket, we had one clear leader with team Carol Weber and Janna Armstrong going 5-1 in the opening round. They were followed by Kerry Schilling and Kellee Mahar, with a 4-2 record. Then we had 3 teams each with a 3-3 record and Denise Vinci and Carmen Kentala got the nod for third over Cindy Baldelli and Dawn Bruenn, with each finishing with 59 pts, but Denise and Carmen got the head-to-head victory in the final game of the opening round. Fiinishing just out in fifth were Gloria Masiado and Kim Grafton with 51 total points.
In the White bracket, Lee Warbinton and Jacque White swept the field with a 6-0 record, followed by a 2 way tie at 4-2. Sam Ragland and Cindy Hildebrand eked by with a 2 point margin and the head-to-head win over Freda Allan and Lynn Vogel. In fourth were Pam Priddy and Jill Tuke with a 3-3 record and a slender 1 point margin and head-to-head win over Carolyn Russell and Jennifer Malacina in fifth.
That put Lee and Jacque, Carol and Janna, Sam and Cindy, and Kerry and Kellee into the Champions draw and Freda and Lynn, Cindy and Dawn, Denise and Carmen, and Pam and Jill into the Consolation bracket.
Lee and Jacque ran the table again to capture the Gold for the Champions bracket. Kerry and Kellee took Silver and Carol and Janna finished with the Bronze. Sam and Cindy can hold their heads high, taking Honorable Mention in this fine bracket.
Cindy and Dawn also ran the table in the Consolation bracket for the Gold. Denise and Carmen got Silver and Freda and Lynn, the Bronze. Pam and Jill earned Honorable Mention for a fine day of play.
Let’s give a hand to all the participants as these were really some of the best pickleball games played. It was not the quick 3 or 4 shot rallies we’ve witnessed in some of the higher level games but, in many cases, extended rallies of 8 or more shots played for each point. These women really worked hard keeping the ball in play!
