The top 2 teams remained hot and the current third place teams is beginning to catch fire, too!
Slice is Right v Oz Squad: In the most even battle of the day, the Oz Squad eked past Slice is Right to move into third place overall. The Slice got the upper hand for the Women’s (Marla Kilfoyle and JoJo Koscheski over Vicki Babbe and Linda Piatt, 21-18 and 21-17) and the Squad flipped the script on the Men’s (Steve Oursler and Bob Moeykens over Oliver Sun and Brian Owens, 23-21 and 21-19). The teams then went on to split both their Mixed Doubles with Oliver and JoJo getting victory over Vicki and Bob, 21-14 and 21-19, and then Steve and Linda winning over Marla and Brian, 21-19 and 21-15. That set up a Dreambreaker where it basically became a one man wrecking crew with Steve winning every point on his serve (a total of 11) to the rest of his team’s 10. But just how close were these teams? Squad scored a total of 175 points to Slice’s 172!
Ball Crushers v Dirty Deeds: Dirty Deeds did the Crushers dirty by going 8 and 2 on the Crushers. The Deeds captured both the Women’s and Men’s Doubles pretty handily, going 21-10 and 21-14 on the Women’s and 21-9 and 21-10 for the Men’s. The Crushers kept the match interesting by splitting both Mixed sets. If they could complete the comeback, they could have sent the contest into a Dreambreaker. In Mixed 1, Rhonda Lakip-Ochoa and Brian Pierce of the Deeds denied Mo Plainfield and Jim Faggiana of the Crushers, 21-15, 19-21, 21-13. The Mixed 2 Deeds team of Jackie Bain and Kevin Gardner followed suit and defeated the Crushers’ Brenda Glenn and Rob Schultz, 21-13, 10-21, 21-19 to close out the sweep.
Dinkin’ Donuts v Stragglers: The Donuts stayed hot and in close pursuit of the other double D team by taking 8 of 9 games from the Stragglers. The Stragglers’ Men of Ron Rivas and Jason Powell managed to get the first game of their doubles versus Scott Shore and Keith Buchman but after that, it was the Donuts all day long (18-21, 21-14, 21-13). The Women Donuts (Vickie Ostrander and Dana Poulson) said, ‘hold my coffee,’ and dunked the Stragglers (Sue Reich and Lisa Farrell) 21-9 and 21-7. Scott and Vickie then teamed up over Ron and Lisa, 21-7 and 21-18, followed by Keith and Dana mopping up the crumbs 21-9 and 21-11 over Jason and Lisa.
That closed out week 3 with the team numbers and ranks being the same!
