Mary Ellen Dowsett and Kaylene Engel Reign Supreme!

We now know who reigns supreme – it’s Mary Ellen Dowsett and Kaylene Engel in the Women’s Doubles Combined 8.0 Tournament today!

The morning started sunny, cool and crisp but as the day wore on, it became overcast and downright windy, wreaking havoc as the fifth person on the courts. The women took it all in stride and rode out the weather and handed out their own punishment on their opponents.

Only one team managed to stay unbowed through the first 5 games, that of the eventual Gold medalists, Mary Ellen and Kaylene. In second were newcomers to these tournaments, Sue Larrow and Colleen Drury. Third went to Jojo Koscheski and Tracy Herzog and fourth were Dana Dodge and Lisa Graham.

In the Semis 1 v 4, Dana and Lisa made a game of it after making the turn at 0-6 but the combo of Mary Ellen and Kaylene met the challenge and finished the game, 11-7. In the Semis 2 v 3, Jojo and Tracy were on fire and dished out a pickle, 11-0, against Sue and Colleen.

For the Gold-Silver game, Jojo and Tracy kept it close but Mary Ellen and Kaylene completed their perfect day and scored the final 3 unanswered points to win it 11-7. In the Bronze game, Sue and Colleen put the pickle behind them and showed Dana and Lisa why they finished second with only a single loss by 1 point to go on and win, 11-3.

Kongrats to all the medalists and thanks again to my volunteers today, Eric Greene, Tony Chiravolo and Curtis Black, and all the fans who came to watch.
