Kim Buffington and Linda Kloeckner take the Gold in the Women’s Open!

I simply have no words for how incredible the play was today at the Women’s Open – no ratings Tournament and in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The morning started with heavy thundershowers but we managed to get all the courts dried in time for game time, thanks in large part to Ted Kegeris for letting us use his VAPTR, and to Robert Danielson, Tony Chiravolo, Rick Fuleky, and Melissa Six-Westerfeld for bringing out an array of leaf blowers to dry what wasn’t picked up by the VAPTR.

But let’s get into the meat and potatoes. These women brought their A game and then some with many games going to 25-30 min. Those were some hell of games! In the end, it came down to 4 undefeated teams with a wining point differential of 37, 29, 27 and 23 to determine the draw for the finals.
The 1 v 4 Semis,Team Kim Buffington and Linda Kloeckner take on the new kids on the block, Team Beth Dicomitis and Angele Lines in a marathon come from behind game with Kim and Linda emerging victorious, 12-10. Beth and Angele gave them everything they had and if the kitchen sink was available, they would have used it, too.

In the 2 v 3 Semis, Team Nancy Summers and Julie Bosch played Team Kaylene Engel and Kim McLain, with Kaylene and Kim winning 11-3.

The Gold/Silver Final, Kim B and Linda faced Kaylene and Kim M in another epic game. Kim B and Linda were able to overcome Kaylene and Kim M in a rousing 11-8 finish.

For the Bronze, Nan and Julie put on the afterburners after switching ends at 6 to win over Beth and Angele, 11-5.
Well played, everyone and Kongrats to the medalists!

Big thank you to everyone who watched and especially to our volunteers, Tony Chiravolo, Chas Popplestone and Julie Ferron for managing the scoreboard.

Next up: The Men’s Open next Sunday! Five slots still available as of Mar 04, 2024!
