And how about those games?
The featured matchup saw the Oz Squad taking a big bite out of Dinkin’ Donuts for a virtual tie in the points race but with the Donuts hanging on by a scant 5% lead in the games won over total games played. The Oz Squad won the day in yet another Dreambreaker (now 4 for 4!) and winning the Men’s and Mixed 1 doubles and the Donuts taking the Women’s and Mixed 2, with both the Women’s and the Men’s going to a third game. The Squads’ Men of Dave Moyer and Steve Oursler led off with a 20-22, 21-11 and 21-18 victory over Keith Buchman and Scott Shore. For the Women, the Donuts Karen Thomas and Vickie Ostrander notched a hard fought win over Vicki Babbe and Linda Piatt, 21-15, 23-25 and 21-19. Then it was a straight set win for Linda and Steve over Karen and Keith, 21-19 and 21-13, with Vickie and Scott returning the favor against Vicki and Dave, 21-16 and 21-14. In the Dreambreaker, the Oz Squad once again showed their brilliance in single play, this time with Dave giving up only 1 point in his 2 turns at the serve, setting up Vicki B with a 19-9 lead to finish off Vickie O at 21-10.
In the other battle of the top 4 teams, Slice is Right climbed over Dirty Deeds 3-1 where nearly everything fell in place for Slice. The Right Women and Men got the ball rolling with with 2 straight set wins. Slice then needed 3 games to take the Mixed 1 doubles and missed a sweep with the Mixed 2 going to the Deeds. Tom Senyitko and Brian Owens teamed up for the 21-19 and 21-18 win over Scott Hudnall and Kevin Gardner. Evelyn Good and Marla Kilfoyle repeated with a 21-13 and 21-17 w over Mandy Berg and Rhonda Lakip Ochoa. Scott and Mandy then teamed up in Mixed 1 but Evelyn and Tom overcame a first game loss, 17-21, to then take the next 2 games, 21-17 and 21-18 to take their third set. Mandy and Kevin prevented the sweep by winning in straight sets over Marla and Brian, 21-16 and 22-20, with a strong effort by Marla and Brian nearly sending the set into a third game.
The Stragglers and Ball Crushers played some hard fought games but in the end, the Crushers took 8 of the 9 games played, including a pair of 26-24 games, and gaining 4 points for the day. The Men’s Rob Schultz and Kevin Faust opened with one of those marathon 26-24 games and completed the straight set win over Ron Rivas and Jason Powell by taking game two 21-17. The Women’s needed 3 games with Mo Plainfield and Lucy Gambescia dropping game one 18-21, to take the next two games, 21-14 and 21-18 over Sue Reich and Diane Tortorice. Lucy and Kevin then swept Diane and Jason, 21-15 and 26-24, with Diane and Jason trying their best to prevent an overall sweep against the Crushers. Sue and Ron ran out of gas against Rob and Mo as the Crushers closed out the day with a 21-16 and 21-11 win.
