The morning started damp and gray but thanks to Ted Kegeris and Chas Popplestone for the use of their Vaptrs to help get the courts dried off and ready to play by 10:30a. With the 30 min delay out of the way, the Men were chomping at the bit to get rolling!
The Blue bracket on courts 1 & 3 was a tight race with 3 teams each finishing 3-1 and a win against each other so it came down to their points for and points against to decide who would make it into the playoffs. To take the bracket, it was the father-son duo of Al and Dylan Sabogal with a 39 points for in their favor. The other 2 teams tied with 38 so we needed to drill down to the points against, giving the nod to BH squared (Bill Harris and Huerin) with a lower 20 points to the 29 given up by Randy Bottorff and Steve Yokum.
In the White bracket on courts 4 & 6, Ron Rivas and Sean Donnelly walked away with a perfect 4-0 record and 22 points against to be the top dog in their bracket. Behind them were the pair of Eric Rossi and Tom Fortes at 3-1, 36 points for and 23 against.
Similarly, in the Red bracket on courts 7 & 9, William McCorkle and Gary Jones as came away with a perfect 4-0 record and the lowest points against of 17 to earn them the #1 seed in the playoffs. Behind them were Tom Psaris and Joe Weber, with a 3-1 record and 38 points for and 32 against, making them the #5 seed. Rounding out the playoff seeding were #2 Ron and Sean, # Al and Dylan, and #4 Bill and Bill.
In the single elimination playoffs, Ron and Sean made short work of Tom and Joe and moved on to the medals round with a 11-2 victory. Al and Dylan got their revenge against Bill and Bill and erased their early 6-11 loss with a 11-3 win. And in a very even match between William (Tex) and Gary against Eric and Tom, Eric and Tom threw everything they had at Tex and Gary but came up short, bowing out 8-11.
The medal round saw an exciting end to the day’s play with each team taking a win against each other, a first for these tournaments since instituting the round robin format for these finals. Ron and Sean defeated Tex and Gary, 11-2, Tex and Gary beat Al and Dylan, 11-9, and Al and Dylan closed out the play with a 11-5 win over Ron and Sean. If you did the math, Al and Dylan finished with 20 points for the Gold. Ron and Sean had 16 for Silver and Tex and Gary, 13, to get the Bronze.
