What a super start to the Fall season for the King Kong Tournaments!
All the brackets were quite competitive and in 2 of the brackets, we had to look at the head-to-head matchups to come to a decision.
In the Red bracket, the team of Gary Jones and Deb McCarty led the way with 4 wins. Three teams were at 3 wins: Dave Keller with Regina White, Keith Buchman with Laura Mayes, and Mandy Berg with Dave Berg. In game 2, Keith and Laura won over Mandy and Dave, 11-1, but lost to Dave and Regina, 5-11 in game 5. Mandy and Dave beat Dave and Regina, 11-8 in game 4. So each had won a game against each other. In Total Points, Dave and Regina came out on top with 49, followed by Keith and Laura at 40, and then Mandy and Dave with 37, giving the nod to Dave and Regina.
In the White bracket, the winners more clear cut with Danny Dowsett and Diane Tortorice going a perfect 5-0, followed by James Faggiana and Mo Plainfield with 4 wins. Behind them were the mother-son duo of Kim and Jason Hedden with 3 wins.
In the Blue bracket, Deborah Merlock and Michael Fagan cruised to a 4-1 finish, leaving behind three other teams with 3 wins: Ron Rivas and Beth Dicomotis, Diane Fuleky and Doug LeFebvre, and Mary Ellen Dowsett and Jim Alexander. Diane and Doug beat Mary Ellen and Jim, 11-9, in game 2, and followed up to win game 5, 11-6, against Ron and Beth, to move on to the playoffs.
In the single elimination round, top seed Danny and Diane faced off against the #6 seed, Diane and Doug (determined by wins and total points), #2 Gary and Deb played against #5 Dave and Regina, and #3 Deborah and Michael clashed against #4 James and Maureen.
Danny and Diane easily handled Diane and Doug, 11-4, to move on to the medals round. The other 2 games were more closely contested, with the underdogs each winning 11-8, moving the teams of Dave and Regina and of James and Maureen into the medals round.
In the first round of the medal games, it was the battle of the underdogs, with #4 seed, James and Mo facing #5 Dave and Regina. They took that game 11-6 to move to their second game against #1 Danny and Diane. Exhausted as they may be, they went on to win 11-7 to capture the Gold. In the final medal game, Dave and Regina found their form again and beat the tenacious duo of Danny and Diane, 11-8, to claim the Silver. Danny and Diane got the Bronze for their solid performance throughout the contest.
Kongrats to the winners and thanks to the participants for a great day of play. Thanks also to the fans who came to watch and super volunteer, Fred Veenstra, for helping manage the scorekeeping.
