What a gorgeous Sunday for the equally stunning women playing in the Base Doubles at the King Kong Tournaments today! And as predicted, many of the games were highly competitive with the losing teams putting up a very respectable 8, 9 or 10 points in their loses.
Only 1 team came away with a perfect record during the round robin play and that was the team of Sharon Ricci and Karin Marburis in the Red bracket. Joining them in the playoffs were the 4-1 Jackie Minyard and Heidi Colburn, who also earned the 4th seed with 54 points for.
In the White bracket, we had 3 teams walking away with 4-1 records, and each having a loose against each other. Two of the teams had 52 points so we had to go to the points against to determine the overall bracket winner. That honor went to Michelle Cumming and Alice Long with a low 29 points against. The runner ups were Stephanie Chan and Robin Lafferty with 37 points against. Tami Downs and Judie Lee missed out with only 44 points for.
In the Blue bracket, there were 2 teams that finished 4-1 and in this case, the bracket winners Cathy Huffman and Lori Gloersen bested Cheryl Hallgren and Shigemi Short in game 4. The newcomers of Joan Selinger and Janet Hornik made the lineup due the team of Kim Miller and Barb Kennedy withdrawing due to Barb injurying her right shoulder in ladder league play (we hope it’s not too serious and you’ll be returning to courts soon, Barb!) and they almost made the playoffs but were denied by the bracket winners, Cathy and Lori.
[Mea Cupla – I mistakenly placed Michelle and Alice ahead of Cathy and Lori as the number 2 seed but Cathy and Lori had 53 points to Michelle and Alice’s 52). What’s done is done.]
In the single elimination playoffs, Michelle and Alice faced Stephanie and Robin, with Michelle and Alice winning 11-5 to move to the medal rounds. The undefeated team of Sharon and Karin saw their streak come to an end at the hands of Cheryl and Shigemi, winning 11-4. And in the final game, Jackie and Heidi eked out a 11-9 win over Cathy and Lori.
In the first game of the medal rounds, Cheryl and Shigemi kept it close against Michelle and Alice but just ran out of steam, losing 11-8. That was unfortunate as they had to face Jackie and Heidi immediately for their second game and lost 11-5 for the Bronze. That set up the Gold and Silver game between Michelle and Alice against Jackie and Heidi. With a good rest between sets, Michelle and Alice sailed to a decisive 11-3 win for the Gold, earning Jackie and Heidi a Silver for their fine performance today.
