Marines Win!

The Marines pulled it off and knocked off Navy in the Gold-Silver match, 5-3! The B teams split their games 2-2 and the Marines held a 2-0 lead going into their Mixed Doubles. The victory by Michael Betsinger and Meta Smith over Brian McCarthy and Tracy McKenna, 11-3 and 11-8 sealed the Gold for the Marines as the mother-son duo of Kim Hedden and Jason Hedden won 2-1 over a very game Buzz Baron and Sue Reich (8-11, 11-7, and 11-7). Navy won the respect of everyone for their mastery all season long along with the Silver.

 
In the Bronze game, much like the Marines and Navy, the B teams for Army and Air Force split for their matches 2-2 and it boiled down to the A team matches. Army was off to a promising start when Doug White and Fred Veenstra took the first game of their best 2 out of 3, 11-7 over Sandy Tucker and Gavin Mason but it was all downhill from there as they won their next 2 games, 11-7 and 11-4. Air Force then went on to win the Women’s and both Mixed Doubles to add 4 points to their total and claimed the Bronze 6-2 over Army.

For the 50/50 raffles, the Villages Honor Flight raised $819, enough money to send a veteran to Washington, DC, and with Ellie from the organization winning the raffle and donating it all back to their cause. The real winners are the veterans and from increasing the awareness of this great cause.
