King Kong Tournaments Ends 2025 with a Bang!

The King Kong Tournaments closed out 2025 with a bang as the Men’s Advanced Doubles brought out some major artillery for today’s games!
 
Starting with the Blue bracket, subs Mike Hay and Russ Mobley put the pedal to the metal to win all 5 of their round robin games and a 27 points against to get the #2 seed overall. Coming in second in the bracket were Tom Musone and Bill Sergent, who beat Rob Schultz and Chris Armstrong in their final game, 11-7, to get into the playoffs. Their points for total of 53, earned them the #4 spot.
 
In the White bracket, it was a two horse race for the finish with both teams at 4-0 before meeting in the fifth game. It was the wily veterans of Doug McClintock and Jim Locascio, both in their 70’s, no less, against the kids, Perry Olson and Steve Oursler, both a generation younger, duking it out to be the top dog and, in this case, youth wins, taking the game 11-7. Perry and Steve also got the #1 seed overall with their 18 points against total. Doug and Jim earned the #5 seed with 51 total points on the day.
 
And finally, in the Red bracket, we saw a 3 way tie between Mark Montgomery and Jason Hedden, Dave Keller and Ed Serzo, and Ralph Brine and Mario Gallant. Each had taken a game off each other so it came down to their points for to determine who came in first and second in their bracket. It was a tight race with Ralph and Mario coming out ahead with 54 points, to Dave and Ed’s 50 and Mark and Jason’s 48. Ralph and Mario got the #3 seed and Dave and Ed, #6.
In the elimination round of the playoffs, Perry and Steve made short work of Dave and Ed, winning 11-3. Doug and Jim punched their ticket into the finals with a tough 11-6 win over Mike and Russ. Ralph and Mario stayed close at the halfway mark but got shutdown after switching ends, dropping the game 11-5 to Tom and Bill.
 
The first game of the medal rounds was a doozy of a rematch between Doug and Jim v Perry and Steve. Doug and Jim were ahead 9-8-1 but gave the ball back to Perry and Steve to finish the game 11-9. Perry and Steve then cruised to a 11-2 win over Tom and Bill to clinch Gold. Tom and Bill made it an interesting match for the Silver but Doug and Jim out powered them to win, 11-5. For a great day of play, that got Tom and Bill the Bronze.
 
Hats off to all the participants for a really excellent day of pickleball and Kongrats to the medalists! Thanks to all the fans who came to watch, I think it was the biggest crowd all year! And thanks again to my volunteers: Fred Veenstra, Miriam Bernstein, Diane Fuleky, and Chris Burns for wrangling the scores and allowing me time to freelance.
