Just when you think it couldn’t get any hotter, 12 teams entered the arena and said, ‘hold my beer!’ It was seriously hot enough for me to smoke some brisket had I had any on hand.
In the Red bracket, Dave and Chris Keller were doing some cooking of their own and ran the table in their bracket to finish 5-0 and claim the top seed in the tourney. In second were Eric Rossi and Terry Clark with 4 wins. There were 3 teams with a pair of wins each and with the head-to-head wins coming into play, Matthew Penasse and Colin Clarke claimed third by virtue of their wins over Gary Jones & Mark Johnson and Steve Esselborn & Gary Blackman. Gary & Mark also notched a head-to-head win over Steve & Gary to claim fourth.
In the White bracket, the race was even tighter with a pair of teams winning 4 and another pair winning 3. Rob Schultz & Gene Konzan grabbed first over Danny Dowsett & Keith Buchman by virtue of their first game 11-7 win. Coming in at third were Kevin Masiado & Ethan Jordan with their game 5 victory, 11-3, over fourth place finishers, Jeff Priddy & Kevin Faust.
That setup the Neo (Champions) bracket with Dave & Chris, Rob & Gene, Eric & Terry, and Danny & Keith. Over in the Agent Smith (Consolation) bracket, we have Kevin & Ethan, Jeff & Kevin, Matthew & Colin, and Gary & Mark. Mark could not continue due to the heat and Tony Chiravolo stepped up to sub for him. The heat also became a problem for the Kellers and after completing the first game of their finals, needed to withdraw for the rest of the games.
In the Neo bracket, Danny & Keith rose to the occasion and swept the field to capture the Gold. Eric & Terry dropped their only loss to Danny & Keith, 11-5, for the Silver. Rob & Gene survived the heat to get Bronze.
Jeff & Kevin got Gold in the Agent Smith group by getting a revenge victory over Kevin & Ethan, 11-5, to go 3-0. Kevin & Ethan collected Silver for their 2 wins. And the Bronze went to Gary & Tony, with their 11-5 win over Matthew and Colin.
Kongrats to all the medalists and all the participants for grinding through the heat. To the Kellers and Mark Johnson, hope you are getting cooled off and rehydrated after your strong performance today.
