Gosh darn it, couldn’t the rain hold out for just another hour or so?
Regardless, 6 teams showed up to play and was the action hot! All the Women’s and Men’s Doubles games got completed and the Mixed Doubles were just underway when the rains came.
Over on courts 1 & 3, we had Dirty Deeds playing the Slice is Right. Both the Women’s and Men’s Doubles needed to go to 3 games to decide the winners. And in both cases, Dirty Deeds came out ahead, 2-1 to take 2 points for the day. For the Women’s, it was Mandy Berg and Jackie Bains edging out JoJo Koscheski and Evelyn Good 21-18, 20-22, and 22-20. And for the Men’s, Kevin Gardner and Dave Berg came out ahead of Oliver Sun and Tom Senyitko 16-21, 21-19, and 21-17. Great play for these evenly matched teams!
On courts 4 & 7, Dinkin’ Donuts faced the Oz Squad (Team Babbe). Both teams had to call out for reinforcements with 2 of the women not available for the Donuts and one of the men on the Oz Squad. The Women’s Double saw another match go to 3 games with super subs Karen Thomas and Denise Hardy of the Donuts getting stronger with each game in defeating Vicki Babbe and Linda Piatt 21-23, 22-20, and 21-6. The Men’s team of Keith Buchman and Scott Shore had an easier time with the Donuts taking it 2-0 over the Squad’s Bob Moeykens and Kevin Masiado, 21-8 and 21-12. That also gives the Donuts 2 points for the day.
Finally, on courts 7 & 9, we had the Ball Crushers split their matches with the Stragglers. The Stragglers also needed help with a sub on the Women’s side but the Crushers duo of Brenda Glenn and Mo Plainfield were just a little too much for the Stragglers’ Sue Reich and Rhonda Lakip-Ochoa, winning 21-18 and 21-19 in another tight contest. The Men’s went to 3 games but this time the Stragglers’ Ron Rivas and Jason Powell rose up to the occasion to defeat Kevin Faust and Jim Faggiana of the Crushers 14-21, 27-25 (!!!), and 21-17. That second game was a doozy! Both teams earn 1 point for the split.
