Spectacular Sunday for W4 of the Playoffs!

The Double D’s faced a tough WIZARDS squad. The Men’s opened with the D’s taking the WIZ’s in straight sets, followed by the Women’s WIZARDs going 2-1 against the D’s. In the Mixed Doubles, the WIZARDS took both of the first games of their match, forcing the D’s to dig deep to finally win those matches 2-1. How close were these teams? Three of those Mixed Doubles games went to OT before being decided.

[Correction: There was discrepancy on the scorecards between Double D’s and the WIZARDS. Double D’s won all for sets, 2-0, 2-1, 2-1, 2-1 (one of the cards showed the WIZARDS Women winning). Now only 3 pts separate the Lobsters and Double D’s. Lobsters just need to win 2 of their matches over the D’s to take the title. WIZARDS still have a chance for third is the Badgers get held to 2 or less points next week.]

The Final Four finally got a win as they took 3 of the matches from Kitchen Carnage. They got the job done with their leaders, Mary Ellen and Danny Dowsett, bringing in super subs, Linda Kloeckner and Chris Armstrong, with the pair bringing home the bacon in the final Mixed Doubles, 2-1, over Dana Poulsen and Keith Buchman. It was a very competitive matchup as 3 matches were decided by 3 games.

The Double D’s must win all 4 points next week if they want to walk away as champs over the Lobsters . If the Lobsters sweep and the Badgers also wins all 4 points next week against the Final Four, Badgers would take second place due to their head-to-head win over the D’s in week 2 of the playoffs. If the Badgers drops any points to the Final Four and the WIZARDS sweep Kitchen Carnage, WIZARDS have a shot at 3rd (if they tie, WIZARDS has the head-to-head win in week 1).

Over at the Gerkins Consolation bracket, it’s a 4 team race to the finish! The Net Warriors took over the lead by dropping the Unforced Terrors 3-1. It was a tightly fought contest, with Women’s and Mixed 1 Doubles going to 3 games (the Terrors won the Women’s and Warriors won Mixed 1). The loss moved the Terrors to 3rd.

The Dreambreakers were back to full strength and came to play versus Welcome to the Jungle. Both teams were hurling thunderbolts at each other, with the Dreamers coming out on top 3-1, with a nail biter of a Mixed 2 Doubles going to Bill Harris and Wendy Bledsoe, 22-20 times 2, over Sean Donnely and Sue Reich. The win moves the Dreambeakers into second.

Jim & Friends found their form today, taking all 4 points from the Designated Dinkers. The Dinkers put a target on sub Tom Musone (for Jim Alexander) but try as they might, they couldn’t fully unnerve the twitchy Musone. The Dinkers best game was in the Mixed 2 Doubles where Jaime and Judy Hemmerle eked out a OT win in game 2, 22-20, but ultimately lost the match 2-1. Jim & Friends are in a points tie with the Terrors but trail in 4th, separated by a mere 1% for games won and lost.

As mentioned last week, the Gerkins will be a photo finish with #1 Warriors to face #2 Dreambreakers and #3 Terrors going up against #4 Jim & Friends, with only 2 pts and 7% points separating the 4 teams.
