What a picture perfect day for the Mixed Combined Intermediate/Base Doubles tournament at Ezell today!
We had another 18 teams throw their hats in the ring to see who would come out with the Gold, Silver and Bronze. Within the 3 brackets, each of the top teams finished with a perfect 5-0 record so we had to separate the seeds by their points differential. In the White bracket, that honor went to Sir Winston and Meta Smith (+34 points), followed by Mandy Berg and Scott Hudnall (+33 points) in the Red bracket, and Tom and Janet Psaris (+18 points) in the Blue bracket.
In the Red bracket, Diane Fuleky and Dave DiCicco came away cleanly as the second seed there with a 4-1 record and also the 4th overall seed. Figuring out who else got the nod needed more work as both the White and Blue bracket had 3 teams each with a 3-2 record, and each team splitting wins amongst each other. For the Blue bracket, Armando and Carol Reyes (51 points) eked it out over Gloria Masiado and Robert Kennedy (50 points) and Stephanie Chen and Oliver Sun (44 points). In the White bracket, that was the team of Pamela and Mark Henry with 49 total points over Tory Brock and David Friedli (45 points) and Tricia Gallagher and Rick Edelman (38 points). Armando and Carol got the 5th with their 2 point edge over Pamela and Mark at the 6th seed.
In the single elimination playoffs, all the top seeds proved that they were indeed the #1, 2 and 3 teams with Mandy and Scott defeating Armando and Carol, 11-2, Smithy and Meta over Pamela and Mark, 11-3, and Tom and Janet getting past Diane and Dave, 11-9. Well played!
That setup the medal rounds with Mandy and Scott facing off against Tom and Janet in the first game, followed by Tom and Janet against Smithy and Meta in game two, and then Smithy and Meta meeting in the final game. Tom and Janet tried to stay in it but were overcome by Mandy and Scott, 8-11, in game one, and ran out of gas against Smithy and Meta, 6-11 to get them the Bronze. That left Mandy and Scott to battle for the Gold against Smithy and Meta. It turned out to be the match of the day, with the teams going into OT and Mandy and Scott pulling out a 12-10 victory. The Smiths earned their Silver as it was probably the best I’ve seen them play as a team.
