It was another day of hot play at the King Kong Tournaments with some pretty dang good contests at the Mixed Base Doubles. We played all 16 teams in 2 brackets of 8 with the top 3 teams in each bracket after 7 round robin games moving on to play for the Gold, Silver and Bronze, respectively. Good job everyone getting through those games on this first full day of summer, although summer in FL started weeks ago!
From the Red bracket, the team of Trina King and Frog Beckham went a perfect 7-0 to take the top seed. Second went to Christopher and Wendi Edgar with a 6-1 record. Battling for third were the teams of Lori Pasbrig and Mark Johnson and Frank Pindulic with Lori Gloersen, each with a 4-3 record. The nod goes to Lori and Mark as they defeated Frank and Lori in game 2, 11-8.
In the White bracket, it was even tighter with the top 2 teams finishing 6-1 and the 2 next best teams finishing 5-2. Nancy Krau and Lou Gianino edged out Denise Vinci and Chuck Palmer for top seed as Nancy and Lou won 11-10 in game 4. For the third and final spot, Deb Hellman and Sterne Maher captured the seed by winning, 11-2, over rivals Cheryl Hallgren and Scott Konkel, also in game 4.
In the battle for the Gold, Trina and Frog stayed undefeated by winning 11-5 over Nancy and Lou. Silver went to Denise and Chuck as they took down Christopher and Wendi, 11-3. Finally, for the Bronze, Deb and Sterne won 11-4 over Lori and Mark. Kongrats to the winners and the teams making it into the finals! Thanks to all the participants and my volunteers, Fred Veenstra and Miriam Bernstein, for keeping track of the scoreboard, and of course, Tony Chiravolo, who has somehow become my go to guy for coffee.
Today was all the last day of regular tournaments for the season as we prepare for the MLP Summer League, with play starting the weekend of Jul 13.
