It was another hot, hot day at the King Kong Tournaments with the Mixed Intermediates dueling not only the sun but also the breezy conditions on court.
Of the 10 teams, we took the top 2 from each bracket. Only Sean Donnelly and Mo Plainfield came through the round robin games undefeated, and the team of Di Lampert and Darrin Sacre winning their final game of their round versus rivals Tony Birchall and Lisa Black, 11-5, to punch their ticket into the playoffs.
In the White bracket, we had a 3 way tie between Vickie Ostrander and Tom Psaris, Nan Summers and Gary Jones, and Bill Brecht and Deb LaVallee. Nan and Gary beat Vickie and Tom in a close 11-8 game and lost to Bill and Deb, 10-11. Vickie and Tom won 11-2 over Bill and Deb in their final game. As Nan and Gary beat Vickie and Tom, Vickie and Tom had the overwhelming margin over Bill and Deb, Nan and Gary came out as the top seed, followed by Vickie and Tom. Good job in a very competitive draw!
In the playoffs, Sean and Mo continued their winning ways, dropping Vickie and Tom, 11-3, to move on to the Gold/Silver game. In a nail biter, Di and Darrin went into overtime to beat Nan and Gary, 13-11, to move on to the Gold/Silver game against Sean and Mo. Will they be able to avenge their 11-6 loss in game 4? Likewise for Vickie and Tom in their Bronze game against Nan and Gary, where they lost to the pair, 11-8, in game 1.
Try as they might, Di and Darrin just could not get past Sean and Mo in their 11-7 loss, earning them the Silver to Sean and Mo’s Gold. In the Bronze game, the outcome was the same 11-7 score, with Nan and Gary besting Vickie and Tom a second time to earn their medal. Kongrats to the medal winners and all the participants. Thanks for the fans for showing their support in the heat and my volunteers, Sue Reich, Miriam Bernstein and Fred Veenstra for managing the scoreboard. And, thanks, of course, to Tony Chiravolo for bringing me my cup of Joe.
