Darrell and Amy Haines capture the Mixed Advanced Gold

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! I can’t think of another word to describe today’s King Kong Tournaments at Ezell. The call went out for the Mixed Advanced to come out and play and did they come to play or what?

We took the top 2 teams from each of the brackets and had the top finishers play a single elimination game with a second place team from another bracket to verify that we indeed had the top teams going into the medals round robin games.

From the Blue bracket, Toby Neubig and Buzz Barron ran away from the field, finishing a perfect 5-0 and an incredible +39 margin for their points differential for the #1 seed. Trailing them were the team of Mary Ellen Dowsett and Dave Keller, going 4-1, 49 total points and an equally amazing +35 points differential.

In the Blue bracket, we had another 5-0 team in Lisa Deister and Derek Wuebbels and a +27 points differential for the #2 seed. The second place finishers were Wendy Bledsoe and Bill Harris with a 4-1 record, 53 total points and a +13 points differential.

Lastly, the White bracket had their own 5-0 team of Darrell and Amy Haines, with a +24 points differential and the #3 seed. The second place finishers were Jason Hedden and Bryana Witt, going 4-1, 52 total points and +15 points differential.

Not wanting to have the second place team face a team they already played in their round robin, I used the points differential for the seeding of 4th, 5th and 6th (Mary Ellen and Dave, Jason and Bryana, and Wendy and Bill, respectively).

In the end, each of the 5-0 team won their single elimination games. Toby and Buzz handily beat Wendy and Bill, 11-2, Lisa and Derek battled Jason and Bryana for a 11-9 win, and Darrell and Amy held off Mary Ellen and Dave 11-6 to confirm each of the top finishers meeting in the medal rounds.

Darrell and Amy powered their way to the Gold by winning 11 -1 against Lisa and Derek and capped it with a 11-3 win against Toby and Buzz. Toby and Buzz earned Silver by taking their first game of the medal round, 11-3, over Lisa and Derek, who got the Bronze.
