What an amazing start to 2025! Today, we featured the Women’s Doubles, 4.0 and Higher from 10a-noon, and then the 3.5 and Lower from noon to 2p. The morning may have started cool but we definitely finished nice and toasty once all the play finished. What a talented group of players for both events!
In the 4.0 and Higher, among the 18 teams, there were 2 standout teams that went undefeated in their brackets and 2 teams going 4-1 in final bracket:
– Red (courts 1-3): Mary Ellen Dowsett and Cass Rollins, 5-0; Nina Riley and Bobby Long, 4-1
– White (courts 4-6): Linda Kloeckner and Kim Buffington, 5-0;
Mo Royal and Debbie Ryan, 4-1
– Blue (courts 7-9): Bryana Witt and Jodi Schaefer (103 total points), edging out Karen Marlowe and Beth Dicomitis (101 total points).
Many of those games were highly competitive with quite a few 21/20 results and many other losses with scores in the upper teens.
In the 3.5 and Lower, we had 15 teams compete, with a couple of teams needing to find subs due to injury or illness. One team won outright in their bracket and there were a total of 7 other teams finishing 3-1.
– Red (courts 2-3): Janice Capdepon and Trixie Swanson, 4-0; Shawn Spaulding and Donine Arnold, 3-1
– White (courts 5-6): Carolyn Russell and Kathleen Banashak, 3-1 with 83 total points topped Mary Funkhouser and Catherine Begin, 3-1 and 82 total points and Sue Reich and Linda Williams, 3-1 and 78 total points
– Blue (courts 1 & 4): Melissa Six-Westerfeld and Ann Friedline, 3-1 with 83 total points and a +21 points differential edge out Michaele Danielson and Lisa Black, 3-1, also with 83 total points but a points differential of +17 and Shelly Odenkirk and Patty Ruch, 3-1 and 82 total points. Talk about close!
And as with the 4.0’s, the 3.5’s also saw many close games decided by 1 or 2 points. Way to play, ladies!
Kongrats to the winners and many thanks to everyone participating today. Hopefully, everyone got to appreciate and learn how the MLP style of play works. We had huge crowd enjoying the games and put your hands together for the volunteers (Miriam Bernstein, Fred Veenstra, Lisa Black, Sue Reich, and Tom Wies) who assisted in taking all the scores throughout the day.
